WWII LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND

Held in June each year, the WWII Living History weekend will feature a war re-enactment, vendors, presentations by historians, breakfasts, a dance and more. The event is held in Rowlesburg, an old Railroad town in Preston County. Also open to the public during the event are the railroad museum and Curiosity Shoppe.

WV DAY CELEBRATION

The West Virginia Day celebration in Kingwood celebrates the birthday of the state each year on June 20. Held at the McGrew House in Kingwood, the event features WV artifacts and stories, photographs and more.

Refreshments and some entertainment is available. The community works together to commemorate the creation of West Virginia as a state.

VIRGINIA IRON FURNACE

Located along Rt. 26 in Albright, West Virginia, the Virginia Iron Furnace is a structure still standing where visitor’s can stop to experience a piece of WV History. The historic water-powered blast furnace that pre-dates the Civil War was built in 1854 and was used as a charcoal iron furnace used to smelt iron.  The furnace remained in operation until the 1890’s and in 1933 the Virginia Furnace was acquired by the Kingwood Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution who created a roadside park at the furnace site.

TERRA ALTA FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION

Terra Alta offers a chance for residents and visitor’s to celebrate the oldest, continuous July 4th celebration in the state of West Virginia with carnival rides, vendors, fire department giveaways, chicken dinners cooked by the TAVFD, a parade, fireworks, and a demolition derby.

Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church, proclaimed as the “smallest church in 48 states” is near Horse Shoe Run & Eglon, WV.  The church building is a 12 feet x 24 feet purpose built family church with an altar & 12 one-seat pews across an aisle.   The church is always open.

ROWLESBURG RIVERSIDE PARK

Rowlesburg Park is a multi-acre riverside public space that has picnic pavilions available to schedule with access to a BBQ grill. The area is next to the river which presents a scenic surrounding for family events. There is a functioning playground, a lighted path, tennis court, basketball court, whitewater events, fishing & bicycling tours.  There are also two baseball fields that have been renewed and house softball tournaments for men, women, co-eds, and T-ball for the younger children with a concession stand open during these times.

Any donations for use of the pavilions and park furniture is always appreciated.
