WWII LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND

Held in June each year, the WWII Living History weekend will feature a war re-enactment, vendors, presentations by historians, breakfasts, a dance and more. The event is held in Rowlesburg, an old Railroad town in Preston County. Also open to the public during the event are the railroad museum and Curiosity Shoppe.

THE SZILAGYI CENTER FOR THE VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

The Szilagyi Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (formerly Rowlesburg school) is owned and operated by the Rowlesburg Revitalization Committee, Inc.

The building is renovated and currently houses the WWII Museum, a small cafe, B&O Bridge exhibit, Train Exhibit, Library, Riverbend Art Studio and Sports Museums.

There are rooms available to rent for business opportunities. There is also internet service in the building.

ROWLESBURG RIVERSIDE PARK

Rowlesburg Park is a multi-acre riverside public space that has picnic pavilions available to schedule with access to a BBQ grill. The area is next to the river which presents a scenic surrounding for family events. There is a functioning playground, a lighted path, tennis court, basketball court, whitewater events, fishing & bicycling tours.  There are also two baseball fields that have been renewed and house softball tournaments for men, women, co-eds, and T-ball for the younger children with a concession stand open during these times.

Any donations for use of the pavilions and park furniture is always appreciated.

OX ROAST-LABOR DAY CELEBRATION

This is Rowlesburg’s modern day “Claim to Fame” & visitors come from all corners of the USA to partake in a gastronomic treat found only in the Cheat River Valley.  The park crew light the BBQ pit fire on Sunday night so that the ox roasts slowly to a moist, melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.  The fire is tended all night to make sure your portion is high quality.  In additon to great food, there is a carnival, music & other entertainment, plus a finale of fireworks from Cannon Hill over the river.

CANNON HILL

Cannon Hill in Rowlseburg rises above the Cheat River on the north side of town.  It is a historic site for it’s strategic location during the Civil War Battle of Rowlesburg in April 1863.  The hill was fortified during the Civil War and was used to protect the main line of the B & O Railroad.  Guided tours can be arranged by appointment May thru October by contacting members of the Rowlesburg Area Historical Society.  Contact Robert Ayersman at 304-454-9303 for more information.

GREATEST GENERATION WWII MUSEUM

THE GREATEST GENERATION WORLD WAR II MUSEUM is a magnificent exhibit worth visiting. You will be surprised by the authentic war time scenes with soldiers, exhibits and many artifacts from both Allied and Axis. Located in the Szilagyi Center (old high school).

Open May through October on Saturday from 11am – 4pm and on Sunday from 1pm – 5pm or by appointment. Groups and tour buses welcome.
